Commissioned by the Boston Pops Orchestra in celebration of their 100th anniversary.

Premiere:  April 30, 1985, the Boston Pops, John Williams conducting, at Symphony Hall in Boston, Massachusettes.
Selected performances:
     December 26 and 27, 2000 at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
     January 2, 2007, New York Philharmonic at Avery Fisher Hall in New York City.
